YOU’LL think twice about guzzling a bottle of this energy drink once you find out what’s really in it.
Lucozade is sold as a sports drink designed to give you a burst of energy, but the popular drink is actually hiding an unhealthy secret.
In a YouTube video, personal trainer Mark Gray demonstrated just how much sugar is inside the product.
He said: “We’re told by the ad companies if we want to run longer or be fitter we need to be drinking Lucozade. I thought I’d actually show you what is in a bottle of Lucozade.”
Mark claimed that guzzling one 500ml bottle of the Lucozade Energy original is the equivalent of eating two family packs of Bassett’s Jelly Babies – as they both contain a whopping 64g sugar.
Mark said: “It’s becoming more and more widely thought that Lucozade and fizzy drinks are responsible for the obesity epidemic.
“If you drink these fizzy drinks regularly you will struggle to lose weight and actually they’ll probably increase your weight.”
However, Mark’s estimations may be slightly inaccurate. According to the nutrition label and Action on Sugar’s energy drinks survey 2015, one 500ml bottle of Lucozade original contains 43.5g of sugar which is the equivalent of 11 teaspoons.
But it’s possible he was thinking of the orange flavour of the energy drink which has even more sugar in it.
The 500ml bottle has 62.5g of sugar – the equivalent of 16 teaspoons – and if you drink the whole thing you’ll be guzzling down 310 calories.
That's more than two regular Snickers bars (60g sugar) and nearly as much as three packs of Oreos containing 18 biscuits (69g sugar).
The sweet beverage has also become the target of a new campaign by Liverpool City Council.
Highlighting just how much sugar is in our favourite fizzy drinks, they named and shamed the sweetest soft drinks and Lucozade was the worst offender.
The council revealed that one 500ml bottle of Lucozade orange is worse than Coca-Cola, Friij chocolate milkshake, Capri-Sun, Tropicana orange juice, Ribena and Volvic flavoured water.
But what might shock you the most is it has even more sugar than Red Bull. The same serving (500ml) of Red Bull has 55g sugar or roughly 14 teaspoons.
A spokesperson for Lucozade Ribena Suntory told Daily Star Online: “Lucozade Ribena Suntory is a responsible drinks manufacturer and take the issue of consumer health seriously.
“We are also committed to marketing our heritage brands responsibly, and as part of a voluntary soft-drinks industry pledge we do not to advertise or market any drink categorised as HFSS (high fat, sugar, salt) to under 16s.
