Spanish professional football coach and former player, Josep 'Pep' Guardiola, who is the current manager of Bundesliga club, Bayern Munich, has today, signed a three-year contract with Manchester City after Manuel Pellegrini confirmed he is leaving at the end of the season.

Pellegrini broke the news at his press conference ahead of Tuesday night's clash with Sunderland while City affirmed they had discussed the job with Guardiola in 2012 as their desire to appoint Guardiola had been an open secret and they released a statement on Monday outlining what will happen in the summer.

The Club's official statement read:

'Manchester City can confirm that in recent weeks it has commenced and finalised contractual negotiations with Pep Guardiola to become MCFC head coach for the 2016-17 EPL season onwards.

The contract is for three years. These negotiations were a re-commencement of discussions that were curtailed in 2012.

Out of respect for Manuel Pellegrini and the players, the club wishes to make its decision public to remove the unnecessary burden of speculation.

Manuel, who is fully supportive of the decision to make this communication, is entirely focused on achieving his targets for the season ahead and retains the respect and commitment of all involved with the leadership of the club.'

N34bn Fraud: Tompolo Begs Court to Cancel Arrest Warrant

It has been more trouble for former militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo alias Tompolo since he was declared wanted by the FG as he has gone to court to beg for his arrest warrant to be set aside.
Ex-Niger Delta militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo

An ex-Niger Delta militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, has gone to court to ask Justice Ibrahim Buba of a Federal High Court in Lagos to set aside the warrant of arrest issued against him. Tompolo filed the application through his lawyers, Mr. Tayo Oyetibo (SAN) and Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, seeking an order of the court to set aside the warrant of arrest issued against him, on the claim that the EFCC did not serve him with the summons and the charge sheet.

In the application, he described as fictitious the address known as No.1, Chief Agbanu DDPA Extention, Warri, Delta State, where the EFCC said it pasted the summons and the charge sheet.

“In the history or geography of Warri or its environs no such street name is known,” Tompolo charged. According to his lawyers, the application filed by the EFCC to obtain the order for substituted service was incompetent because it did not bear the seal of the legal practitioner who signed it.

In an affidavit filed in support of the application, one, Nsikan Udo, who was the deponent, claimed that Tompolo’s resided at No. 13 Chief Agbamu Close, DDPA Extension, Warri (Effurun), Delta State and not No. 1, Chief Agbamu DDPA Extension, Warri, Delta State where the summons and the charge sheet were pasted by the EFCC.

The deponent claimed that as of January 11 when the EFCC went to paste the court papers, Tompolo was at“a premises known as No. 1 Chief Agbamu Lane DDPA Extension, Warri (Effurun), Delta State throughout the week beginning from 11th January 2016.”

“The gate of the premises known as No. 1 Chief Agbamu Close, DDPA Extension, Warri (Effurun), Delta is black in colour and is not perforated nor does it have a see-through, reddish/brown gate with iron bars shown in Exhibit GE4,” Udo claimed.

Tompolo wants “an order setting aside the warrant for the arrest of the 1st accused person/applicant (Government  Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo) issued by this court on 14th January 2016 pursuant to the purported service of the summons and the criminal charge instituted in this case on the applicant.”

According to Punch, Adegboruwa, in a statement, said his client was prepared to willingly come to court to answer any charges preferred against him only if his legal rights will not be rubbished. He has notified the Inspector General of Police, the Chief of Army Staff and the Navy of his application.

It would be recalled that Justice Buba had on January 14 issued a bench warrant against Tompolo and ordered his arrest for failing to honour a court summons dated January 12 in respect of a 40-count of alleged N34bn fraud levelled against him and nine others by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. On January 14, while all his co-accused persons were in court with their lawyers, Tompolo was absent and was not represented by any lawyer.

The EFCC prosecutor, Festus Keyamo, had then applied under Section 131 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 for an order to arrest Tompolo and bring him to court to answer the charges against him.

While granting the order, Justice Buba had said there was a proof that the EFCC had served the summons and the charge sheet on Tompolo by pasting them on the wall of his residence at No. 1, Chief Agbanu DDPA Extension, Warri, Delta State.

The judge ordered that Tompolo should be arrested and produced in court on February 8 to answer the charges.

In the charge against Tompolo and others, the EFCC accused them of conspiring to divert various sums running into over N34bn, stolen from the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency to their personal use. Charged alongside Tompolo is the immediate past Director General of NIMASA, Patrick Akpobolokemi; one Kime Engozu, Rex Elem, Gregory Mbonu and Capt. Warredi Enisuoh.

They were charged along with four companies – Global West Vessel Specialist Limited, Odimiri Electrical Limited, Boloboere Property and Estate Limited and Destre Consult Limited. The EFCC said they acted contrary to Section 18 (a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012 and were liable to punishment under Section 15 (3) of the same Act.

Corpses Everywhere! Disturbing Pictures from Boko Haram Massacre in Dalori, Borno

A 4-hour mayhem orchestrated by suspected members of the Boko Haram sect in Nigeria has claimed several lives with others injured and their village burned.
Some of the victims at the hospital

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has put the death toll in an attack on Dalori, a village in Borno State in Nigeria’s volatile northeast region at 85, according to Channels Television.

At night, the Boko Haram came in through the bush, some of them riding on motorcycles and some in cars, unleashing mayhem on the village. People ran helter skelter for safety, some crossed the river behind the village, but the terrorists were there to plunder the village, killing people and destroying homes and property.

Those who ran were lured to death by some suicide bombers who pretended to be residents and called them with torchlights, urging them to come to where they called ‘safe haven’, only to detonate their explosive devices, killing many of them.

The town has been torn apart and thrown into agony. A resident revealed some gory details on the massacre. In the words of the person:

“They came in through the bush, some of them riding on motorcycles and some in cars. People ran helter skelter for safety, some crossed the river behind our village and we made distress calls to the soldiers but no help came. They started shooting and burnt the town. They even beheaded some of us and set the elderly, who could not escape, on fire,”

Nutritional Benefits of Eating Ofada Rice & How to Prepare the Dish with Sauce

Ofada rice is the short, thick and robust shaped specie of rice. It is also known as brown rice. The rice is unpolished and not genetically modified. Majority of people are usually put off because it contains some stones and chaffs which add to the stress of preparing it as compared to the other types of rice.

An advise to anybody interested is to over look the stress and enjoy the enormous benefits of ofada rice and you will be glad.

It has two types of fiber - soluble and insoluble fiber.

The soluble fiber slows the rate at which food leaves the stomach and promotes a sense fullness after a meal. This helps to prevent overeating and weight gain. While the insoluble fiber is also known as cellulose which is indigestible and has less transit time through the body. In general, the higher a food’s fiber content, the lower it tends to be in available calories. That is why you can eat a very large serving of salad, which is almost all fiber, and still eat very few calories. And high-fiber diets also tend to be less “energy dense,” which means they have fewer calories for the same volume of food. Therefore when you eat brown rice, you are actually eating fewer calories.

Insoluble fibers also help the body get rid of some dietary fat. As it goes out of the body via the excretion process it grabs fats and carries them all the way through to the colon, where they are bundled together and eliminated from the body. Hence brown rice is preferred by people dieting to lose weight.

Nutritional benefits of ofada rice:

1. The soluble fiber in brown rice controls blood sugar and diabetes. Which help to slow down the release of glucose into the blood.

2. Brown rice protects the body against colon cancer particularly because of its high fiber content and the presence of selenium in the brown rice. Selenium is a trace mineral that induces DNA repair and synthesis in damaged cells and inhibits the proliferation of cancer cells. Selenium is an antioxidant and is essential for thyroid hormone metabolism and immune function. It lowers the level of LDL cholesterol which is known as the bad cholesterol so as to prevent weight gain

3. Brown rice is important for a healthy heart, prevent heart attack and stroke. Researchers at Temple University School of Medicine report that brown rice is a better choice over white because it has an ingredient that protects against high blood pressure and atherosclerosis.

4. It has about twice the fiber content of regular white rice. Fiber aid digestion cleanses the colon, grabbing passing nasty toxins such as pollutants, chemicals, pesticides and heavy metals. It cures constipation and intestinal blockage.

5. The manganese and magnesium aid to reduce severity of asthma. The magnesium content also lowers high blood pressure, and reduces the frequency of migraine headaches. Magnesium keeps bones healthy.

6. It is a perfect Baby Food. Brown rice cereal or brown rice itself is the perfect baby’s first food due to the dense natural nutrition and fiber it contains. This is a much better choice than refined white rice/corn cereal products because rapidly growing babies and toddlers require nutrient rich diets to help maintain rapid growth cycles.

7. It heals candida yeast Infections because of its high fiber which can help sensitive digestive systems to heal from an overgrowth of candida organisms.

8. Brown rice can be a delicious meal for both vegetarian and vegan diets. Brown rice flour can be used for vegetarian pancakes, breads and other baked goods.

Britain Grants First Licence to Genetically Modify Human Embryos

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), has given its first approval to alter the human embryo to provide a deeper understanding of the earliest moments of human life.

UK scientists have been given the go-ahead by the fertility regulator to genetically modify human embryos. It is the first time a country has considered the DNA-altering technique in embryos and approved it. The research will take place at the Francis Crick Institute in London and aims to provide a deeper understanding of the earliest moments of human life.

It will be illegal for the scientists to implant the modified embryos into a woman. But the field is attracting controversy over concerns it is opening the door to designer - or GM - babies. DNA is the blueprint of life - the instructions for building the human body. Gene editing allows the precise manipulation of DNA.

In a world-first last year, scientists in China announced they had carried out gene editing in human embryos to correct a gene that causes a blood disorder. Prof Robin Lovell-Badge, a scientific advisor to the UK's fertility regulator, told the BBC: "China has guidelines, but it is often unclear exactly what they are until you've done it and stepped over an unclear boundary.

"This is the first time it has gone through a properly regulatory system and been approved."

Groundbreaking

The experiments will take place in the first seven days after fertilisation. During this time we go from a fertilised egg to a structure called a blastocyst, containing 200-300 cells. The work will be lead by Dr Kathy Niakan, who has spent a decade researching human development.

Earlier this year, she explained why she had applied to edit human embryos: "We would really like to understand the genes needed for a human embryo to develop successfully into a healthy baby.
"The reason why it is so important is because miscarriages and infertility are extremely common, but they're not very well understood."

Out of every 100 fertilised eggs, fewer than 50 reach the early blastocyst stage, 25 implant into the womb and only 13 develop beyond three months.

And at the blastocyst stage, some cells have been organised to perform specific roles - some go on to form the placenta, others the yolk sac and others ultimately us.

How and why this takes place is unknown - but some parts of our DNA are highly active at this stage. It is likely these genes are guiding our early development, but it is unclear exactly what they are doing or what goes wrong in miscarriage. The researchers will alter these genes in donated embryos.

The regulator, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), has given its approval and the experiments could start in the next few months.

Paul Nurse, the director of the Crick, said: "I am delighted that the HFEA has approved Dr Niakan's application.
"Dr Niakan's proposed research is important for understanding how a healthy human embryo develops and will enhance our understanding of IVF success rates, by looking at the very earliest stage of human development."

Dr Sarah Chan, from the University of Edinburgh, said:"The use of genome editing technologies in embryo research touches on some sensitive issues, therefore it is appropriate that this research and its ethical implications have been carefully considered by the HFEA before being given approval to proceed.

"We should feel confident that our regulatory system in this area is functioning well to keep science aligned with social interests."
