Judge Jonathan Rose decided the 28-year-old's fate today after he was convicted of sexual activity with an adoring 15-year-old fan.
The judge said Johnson thought of the girl as "another opportunity" and that he has a history of "compulsive sexual behaviour".
Prosecutor Kate Blackwell QC meanwhile said Johnson treated the victim with "trifling irrelevance".
After passing the jail term, the judge orderered Johnson to pay £50,000 of the prosecution's £67,132 costs.
The sentencing hearing also heard that Johnson has lodged an appeal, that his victim was hospitalised after taking an overdose during the trial and that Johnson's growth was "retarded" as a child.
Father-of-one Johnson stood trial last month over a fateful meeting with an adoring fan in his car in January 2015.
The ex-Middlesborough FC youth prodigy had already admitted to kissing and grooming the girl but denied further activity.
But after a series of damaging and sordid revelations in court, surrounding the 834 WhatsApp messages he exchanged with the girl, descriptions of Johnson's pubic hair, and his holiday in Dubai while on bail, he was found guilty of another count of sexual activity.
The adoring fan told police Johnson unzipped her trousers and touched her vagina.
But he was found not guilty of one other sexual activity count – an allegation that she performed oral sex on him.

The ex-England international has been told to wish hisinfant daughter Ayla farewell in preparation for a jail termas long as 10 years – potentially in the infamous Frankland prison.
The former England international was filmed earlier literally sprinting – without ex-girlfriend Stacey Flounders – into the court while press captured the moment his Range Rover left his gated home in Castle Eden, Co. Durham.
Johnson's sister Faye, 23, who has tried to launch online campaigns in support of her brother, has meanwhile explained why she's not attending her brother's sentencing hearing in a Facebook post.
She wrote: "Today is the sentencing for my brother, the worst day of my life.
"I just wanted to let all of the supporters know that I will not be attending Bradford Crown Court, the reason for this is Adam has always been my hero, my brother and my best friend, I just don't want him to see the pain in my eyes!
"Instead I will be at home with my little boy, Adam's number 1 fan, Adam's daughter and the mother of his child Stacey.
"I remain proud of my big brother and I am 100% behind him and I always will be."
