A spokeswoman for the NCA said: "The Metropolitan Police are the lead force in London, but we continue to work with our partners both nationally and internationally."
The news comes days after Britain's head of counter terrorism warned the UK was facing an imminent threat of a Paris-style atrocity.
Mark Rowley, assistant commissioner for specialist operations for Metropolitan Police, said: "In recent months we've seen a broadening of that, much more plans to attack Western lifestyle, and obviously the Paris attacks in November.
"Going from that narrow focus on police and military as symbols of the state to something much broader.
"And you see a terrorist group which has big ambitions for enormous and spectacular attacks, not just the types that we've seen foiled to date."
A Home Office spokesman said it does not comment on operational matters and matters of national security.
