Height of stupidity: Foolish couple dare each other to risk death on cliff edge

THIS reckless couple shocked onlookers as they dared each other to pose for photos on the edge of a crumbling 200ft cliff - days after experts warned it is collapsing.

The man and woman believed to be in their 20s were seen laughing as they egged one another to balance on top of the limestone edifice.

Large parts of the Seaford Head cliff edge were roped off by the local authority last week when walking enthusiast Wayne Spring noticed large cracks appearing on the cliff face.

RISK: Days earlier experts had warned the cliffs were crumbling

Wayne, who spotted the foolish couple playing chicken on the cliff edge of the East Sussex cliff said it was only a matter of time before the inevitable happened.

The 49-year-old who photographed the foolish pair on Monday said: “Their behaviour was mental. They were playing and seeing how close they could get.

“The people at the bottom were gasping and waiting for the worst to happen. You could see that he was very unsure about it and he wouldn't go as far to the edge as she did.

“It really was terrifying and you could hear people shouting 'oh my god' from below.

WARNINGS: There are no signs for much of the cliff

“It wasn't as windy as it has been, but if the wind had picked up then it could have easily gone very pear shaped.“

Whilst parts of the cliff top at Seaford Head, have been roped off by the council, much of the three mile cliff edge has no warning signs or barriers.

Newhaven Coastguard spokesperson Trevor Cutler said Seaford Town council had placed warning signs along parts of the cliff but were unable to stop people from getting close to the edge.

Trevor, station officer for Newhaven Coastguard, said: “The council roped off a large part of the cliff edge and used spray paint to spray a warning sign on the grass 'danger imminent cliff fall'

“People risking their lives has always been a problem.

FALL: The high winds could have easily thrown them off the side

At the moment there is a considerable crack opening up after the long wet periods we have had and it's very worrying.

“There's not a lot we can do, we try and educate people about the dangers, people should be at least five metres away from the edge at all times.

“It's a very awkward situation.”
