FA and Roy Hodgson issue apology for shocking Euro 2016 campaign

THE FA have issued a public apology for England's Euro 2016 humiliation.

GONE: Hodgson resigned last night
Chief executive Martin Glenn admitted: "My message to the fans is sorry.
"We have come up short and that situation has bedevilled England for many years.
"After our defeat against Iceland, I took off my jacket and tie and went into town to talk to the fans.
"We didn't punch our weight, but I would also like to thank Roy Hodgson on behalf of the FA, because we have a much stronger team and set-up than we had four years ago when he came in.
"He is a man of great honour and integrity."
Glenn revealed that he would be part of a three-man panel who will choose Hodgson's successor, with FA technical director Dan Ashworth and FA board member and Manchester United director David Gill.
Hodgson, who resigned after the defeat to Iceland, admitted: "I'm very fragile today and my emotions are too raw.
"We are going home as losers and I didn't see that coming. There was no indication in the previous games that we would play as poorly as we did against Iceland.
"As manager I take responsibility, but I still believe this team can develop into one to make the country proud."
Skipper Wayne Rooney, meanwhile, denied claims that senior England players had been unhappy with Hodgson's team selections.
Glenn also said England would appoint the best man for the job - not necessarily the best Englishman.
