WRONG MOVE: Mario Gotze thinks it would be a step backwards to leave Bayern for Liverpool
The Bayern Munich midfielder was the Reds top transfer target this summer as they wanted to reunited him with Jurgen Klopp.
But SportBild suggest that he would still be open to a summer move away from the Allianz Arena should the right club make an offer.
They state that he turned down Liverpool and former club Borussia Dortmund as he thought they would be a step backwards after his time at Bayern.
Instead he is eyeing a switch to Real Madrid or Barcelona while SportBild report that Arsenal could also be a possibility.
"I had talks with him (Mario) and (Carlo) Ancelotti. Mario knows the thoughts of Bayern," Rummenigge said last week.
"Everything was clearly and seriously explained to Mario. He knows what the club thinks and what the new coach thinks.
"Mario has to consider for himself whether he wants to constantly get minutes."
Liverpool are unable to offer Gotze European football next season while Dortmund have won only one trophy since the midfielder left for Bayern in 2013.
Should Arsenal decide to make a move for the 23-year-old, he would team-up with international team-mates Mesut Ozil and Per Mertesacker at the Emirates Stadium.
