CELEBRATIONS: England are now top of Group B
Hodgson’s England came from behind to go top of Group B thanks to second-half goals from Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge.
Gareth Bale had earlier made a mug of Joe Hart with a long-range free kick before half-time to fire Wales ahead .
Wales boss Coleman was inconsolable afterwards in the wake of Sturridge’s dramatic late winner with less than two minutes of stoppage time to go.
But Hodgson was in no mood to feel sorry for him as he had the last laugh on opponents who had taunted England throughout the build-up to the game in Lens.
Hodgson said: “If I’d been watching from afar and not been with England and watching Wales play some other opponent I would have felt sorry for them.
“But they will have to excuse me not feeling sorry for them because I want to be pleased with ourselves.”
Coleman admitted it was the lowest he’d ever felt at the final whistle, saying: “I’d have to say yes, to be honest.
“I can’t say I’ve felt that disappointed too many times in my career as I did when that goal went in. It was a bitter pill to swallow.
“But England got over it, conceding in the last minute against Russia, and showed good courage to recover.
“We have to put it to bed and get ready for Russia now.”
Liverpool striker Sturridge helped set up Vardy’s equaliser after the pair came on at half-time before grabbing the winner himself with seconds left.
“It’s a great feeling - unbelievable,” he said.
“I am grateful to the gaffer for the opportunity and God for allowing me to score.
“It is a brilliant feeling. It is only one more game in the group, so no-one wants to get too excited.
“But the atmosphere is unbelievable and the togetherness between the two countries here is unbelievable.
“It is great to help the boys win the game, my brother and my cousin have travelled here to the game and it is great for them to experience this.”
