There is a saying that there are no permanent friends or foes in politics but permanent interests. As long as the interests are the same, politicians stay together to control power and state resources to their sole advantage.
President Muhammadu Buhari
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while he was a chieftain of the Action Congress of Nigeria expressed his displeasure about President Muhammadu Buhari's candidacy under the banner of the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC in the 2011 presidential election on the basis of age .
Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El Rufai who was a chieftain of the People's Democratic Party in the year 2010 also attacked Buhari on the basis of age.
The former Governor of Lagos State and Current Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola also discouraged Lagosians from voting Jimi Agbaje as the governor of Lagos state in 2015 on the basis of his age, 59 which in principle indirectly disqualifies Buhari who was 72 as at the time of contesting for the presidential seat.
Fast-forward to February 6, 2013, Tinubu, El Rufai, Fashola and Buhari alongside other prominent Nigerian politicians formed the All Progressives Congress and unanimously rooted for Buhari to be Nigeria's president after eating their words.
Read excerpts of their different statements directly and indirectly made about Buhari's old age in the past:
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu
"What has CPC (Congress for Progressive Change) got to offer? Certainly we don't need expired leadership"
Governor of Kaduna Nasir El Rufai
"I was 25 years old when Buhari was Head of State and now I am 50+ and he wants to be President. I don't understand.....I don't understand at all. I call on all young people of Nigeria to take their future into their hands and ensure that they vote for a new generation of leaders"
Former Governor of Lagos state and Current Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola
"When I took office, I was 44; then I could count the white hair on my head; now I am 51, I am counting the black hair on my head. Don't put old people there ooo. If you put old people there, they will sleep ooo, and they will not be able to work"
