Luca Toni has revealed how he “almost came to blows” with Louis van Gaal at Bayern Munich.
Verona and Italy striker Toni retired from the game after a 22-year professional career on Sunday, scoring in his side’s 2-1 win over Serie A champions Juventus.
Toni dispatched a Panenka penalty to hand already-relegated Verona victory, bringing to an end an illustrious career.
Speaking after the game, Toni said: “It was a risky penalty, but to do good things you need to take risks. Fortunately it went well.
“Every goal in my career feels beautiful to me. Perhaps this evening’s is the best, as it closes my career with so many emotions wrapped up in it.”
Toni then discussed his relationship with Verona boss Luigi Delneri, with the two having clashed previously during his time at the club.
“We didn’t get along very well, that’s for sure,” Toni told Italian TV. “But it is not nice talking about it now. In any case we cleared the air.
“In the past I had much worse misunderstandings with Van Gaal when I was playing at Bayern Munich.
“Back then we almost came to blows.”
Discussing his future, Toni added: “I have seen my former team-mates age five years every 12 months since they became coachesI’d prefer to do something in a directorial role.
“I will speak to Verona and the president, because I still owe the city something. I’d like to help this club get back into Serie A, because it is where they deserve to be.
“If not then I’ll look around for something to do, because I doubt my wife wants me hanging around the house too much.”
