The Sun claim Jose Mourinho is concerned about his lack of defensive cover amid a growing injury crisis at the back.
Eric Bailly is out until the New Year, Antonio Valencia has a hand injury and Phil Jones is a long-term absentee.
However, Borthwick-Jackson's lack of game time this season might be a concern to Mourinho.
The 19-year-old has managed only six appearances for Wolves since joining the club on a season-long loan.
He broke into United's first team last season, making 14 appearances.
But the return to fitness of Luke Shaw from a broken leg meant opportunities at Old Trafford looked increasingly limited.

He penned a new four-year Manchester United contract just days after the Special One took the reins at the club.
The versatile defender confirmed that Mourinho had given him assurances about his future before he joined Wolves.
Speaking in August, he said: "My aim is to play as many games as I can, get as much experience as I can with the hope to go back there and challenge for a spot in the team.

"Mourinho has told me I've got a future there, he sees a future for me. So that's what I'm looking to do, gain experience and start there.
"I've had interest from Premier League clubs and other Championship clubs but I wanted to come here [to Wolves] and help the club get back to where they belong, which is the Premier League."
