Borussia Dortmund confirm Mats Hummels has asked to leave

BORUSSIA DORTMUND have confirmed Mats Hummels has asked to leave the club.

ASKED TO LEAVE: Mats Hummels wants to return to Bayern Munich
The Dortmund captain's future has been subject to intense speculation in recent months and headmitted last week that he was losing sleep over a decision.
His contract at the Westfalenstadion runs until the end of next season but Dortmund have announced Hummels has asked to leave to make a return to Bayern Munich.
They state that Bayern are yet to make an offer for the 27-year-old and that the World Cup winner does not have a release clause but they are prepared to grant him his wish should they receive a suitable offer.
A statement read: “Defender Mats Hummels of Borussia Dortmund has communicated his desire to leave the club in the summer and wants to join the league rivals Bayern Munich next season.
“Borussia Dortmund’s board has subsequently decided to make such a change depending on whether Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund can agree a satisfactory fee. So far, Bayern Munich has not made an offer.
“As a precaution, it is pointed out that with Mats Hummels - as at present with all other players from Borussia Dortmund - no exit clause has been agreed and the player is logically tied to Borussia Dortmund until June 30, 2017.”
Hummels had been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League over the last 12 months with Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and both Manchester clubs reported to be interested in him.
However, they look set to miss out on his signature given his preference to return to Bayern.
He spent 14 years in the club's academy and made one senior appearance before moving to Dortmund in 2009.
Should Bayern and Dortmund come to an agreement over a transfer, Hummels would become the third player to swap the Westfalenstadion for the Allianz Arena in the last three years.
Mario Gotze left in 2013 in a £31.5m deal while Robert Lewandowski moved the following summer on a free transfer.
