HILLARY Clinton faces a reopened FBI investigation in US Election shock.
Comey wrote to the head of congressional committees: "The FBI should take appropriate investigative steps designed to allow investigators to review these emails to determine whether they contain classified information, as well as to assess their importance to our investigation."
He briefed them saying the agency had "in connection with an unrelated case, the FBI has learned of the existence of email that appear to be pertinent".
Republican rival Donald Trump slammed Clinton over the new probe when speaking at a rally moments after the announcement.
Trump said he had "great respect" that the FBI had the "courage" to reopen the investigation.
Representative Bob Goodlatte, chair of the House Judiciary Committee, said: "Now that the FBI has reopened the matter, it must conduct the investigation with impartiality and thoroughness.
"The American people deserve no less and no one should be above the law.”
