The American giants have been linked with a swoop for Rooney as the Manchester United star's future hangs in the balance.
The England international hasn't started United's last five games under Jose Mourinho and the Red Devils boss has reportedly told him to leave if he wants first-team football.
But Lalas has warned his old side off a move for Rooney, urging them not to make the same mistake they made with Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.
“They got little return on the Steven Gerrard investment and does Rooney still have much to give and something which works in the MLS, even if he is five years younger than Gerrard?" he told The Sun.
“Are you replacing a player who had limited involvement and limited impact, with yet another player who will have limited involvement and limited impact?
“If Rooney, at 31, doesn’t still have the things which made him great, then it’s problematic.”
Rooney has netted just twice in his past 24 United appearances, with his last goal coming against Bournemouth in August.
“Living in Beverly Hills is great,” Lalas added.
“But if you don’t couple it with performances on the field then you are just stealing money.
“The player he is now isn’t the player of ten years ago - but then no one is.”
