Newcastle defender Daryl Janmaat had to leave St Mary’s in a sling after injuring himself punching a wall during his side’s dismal defeat at Southampton.
Janmaat was substituted 40 minutes into the 3-1 loss, which edges Newcastle closer to relegation, due to a groin injury sustained falling awkwardly in the build up to Graziano Pelle’s goal.
And according to numerous reports, the Dutchman, who was one of three Magpies defenders to feature in winners and losers, was left with two broken fingers after venting his frustration on a dressing room wall.
The injury is not expected to rule the right-back out of clash with Swansea City at St James’ Park on Saturday.
Newcastle icon Alan Shearer, meanwhile, has slammed the club’s recruitment policy – in particular the failure to sign a new centre-back in January.
“It says it all that Steven Taylor, who was hooked at half-time at Southampton, and Fabricio Coloccini, who was playing every week before his injury, were two of the centre-halves I had as manager when we were relegated in 2009,” the pundit told The Sun.
