SENATOR Ted Cruz looks set to become the Republican Party's nomination for US President after beating Donald Trump at the Iowa caucus.
VICTORY: Cruz took the suprise win with 28 per cent of the vote
Cruz, the Texan right-wing lawmaker, claimed 28 per cent of the vote while Trump, who has led in the polls over the last month, came second with 24 per cent.
Senator Marco Rubio from Florida came in third place with 23 per cent, making him easily the leader among establishment candidates.
Cruz will be celebrating the win in Iowa, the first of the two Caucuses which help to predict the future president, with a country music band with “blue collar roots”.
Banners with Cruz’s campaign slogans ”Trusted" and "Cruzin' to Victory" are hanging from the ceiling of his Iowa election day headquarters, where he and his team watched with bated breath to see the results of the caucuses.
