The controversial launch, which could now be rendered useless, was described by the US as missile test.
But officials in North Korea’s capital Pyongyang insist it is only for earth observation uses.
A US official said the satellite briefly stabilised before once again faltering.
It comes after a US official said its military could not protect America against a North Korean missile assault.
Top ranking military personnel say the launch was clearly meant as a demonstration that Kim Jong-un’s regime could launch an intercontinental missile.
And a report by the US Government Accountability Office highlighted fears that a missile assault from the hermit nation could cause devastation.
It said the US military had failed to demonstrate that it could defend the nation from an attack.
