Pals said demanding work schedules and dramatic rows were hallmarks of their relationship.
The sources also compared the couple’s arguments to “an episode of EastEnders”.
It was claimed the two stars had been keeping up appearances and living under the same roof for a year.

But they were not living as husband and wife and they announced their separation last week after eight years of marriage.
Fox, 37, posted a statement on his Facebook page that said: “Laurence Fox and Billie Piper have separated. No third parties are involved.
“For the sake of our family we request and appeal for space and privacy at this time.”
Moving from Sussex to London is said to have been a last-ditch bid to save the marriage.

The couple met while starring in a play together in 2006. They wed on New Year’s Eve 2007 in Eastbourne.
The former Doctor Who actress, 33, and Fox have two sons – Winston, seven, and Eugene, three.
Fox, who starred as Detective Inspector James Hathaway in the TV series Lewis, has previously admitted they got matching tattoos during a “drunken lunch” on their honeymoon in Mexico.

His tattoo reads: “Mrs Fox 31st December 2007” and Billie’s says: “Mr Fox 31st December 2007.”
It is said Billie may laser off her tattoo now they have split.
