Xi made the demand after meeting with US President Barack Obama during a top nuclear summit in Washington.
In another attack on Kim, he agreed to back the United Nations' latest sanctions against the cheese-loving despot.
And he warned UN bosses would impose even tougher measures if trigger-happy Kim keeps carrying out nuclear tests.

Before the meeting Xi told reporters: "China and the US have a responsibility to work together."
He admitted the two sides have "disputes and disagreements" but insisted they could "seek active solutions through dialogue".
And Obama said: "President Xi and I are both committed to the de-nuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula."

South Korean leader Shinzo Abe also warned Kim against further "provocations" after the North threatened to attack its neighbour.
This week a chilling propaganda video claimed the hermit state is preparing to strike Seoul's glitzy presidential palace.
But Abe said: "Should it choose to undertake yet another provocation, it is certain to find itself facing even tougher sanctions and isolation."
