DESTROYED: The front carriages of each train have been reduced to debris
The locomotives were travelling between Corato and Ruvo, north of the Italian city of Bari, when they crashed.
Initial reports vary as to the number killed, but at least 12 are confirmed dead so far, according to local media.
Helicopter footage of the scene shows the front carriages of each train reduced to nothing more than debris.
Reports suggest the trains were regional carriers, both packed with passengers at the time of the crash.
Many are still trapped and firefighters are on the scene alongside police and ambulances.
