GUNSHOTS have been reported in Washington while the White House and US Congress have been put in lockdown, Senate sources have said.
SHOOTING: People have been urged to 'take cover'
One police officer has been shot and authorities have urged people to stay outside the complex, advising them to "take cover".
The officer is not thought to be seriously injured but workers have been told to "shelter in place".
Gunshots were first heard in the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center. No one is currently allowed in or out of any buildings in the complex.
The gunman has been captured and is in custody, according to US officials.

The news comes just days after terror attacks in Brussels killed 35 people.
The Belgian capital, home of the EU, was brought to its knees by ISIS suicide bomb attacks at an airport and on the city's underground network.
Earlier today, Presidential hopeful Donald Trump warned that Britain is not "a safe place" after the shocking attacks in both Paris and Brussels.
While last week, US military chiefs admitted America is unprepared for all-out war with Russia or North Korea.
Congress is in recess, with few lawmakers in the city.
